Project Overview

Liba Consulting was appointed to deliver the full structural engineering design for a single-storey ground floor extension and internal alterations at a residential property in Harringay North London. The project involved transforming the existing layout to create by adding a ground floor extension to a more open and functional living space, while ensuring full structural integrity and compliance with current regulations.

Our Role 

  • We provided a comprehensive structural design package, including:  Structural calculations for all new elements  
  • Design of steel beams and a goalpost frame system  
  • Foundation design (strip and pad foundations)  
  • Lintel design for new openings   Structural specifications for construction 
  •  Risk assessment and compliance strategy  

All works were designed in accordance with relevant Eurocodes (EN 1990, EN 1991, EN 1993, EN 1996, EN 1997), ensuring safety, durability, and regulatory compliance.  

Key Engineering Challenges

  • Designed a goalpost frame system to support new openings and loads from above
  • Specified S355 steel members with detailed connection design

Foundation Design

  • Designed strip foundations and multiple pad foundations for steel posts
  • Verified bearing pressures against allowable soil capacity
  • All foundation checks achieved PASS within safe utilisation limits

Lintels & Load Transfer

  • Designed lintels for new openings, including bifold door support
  • Ensured adequate bearing lengths and load distribution
  • Verified loads from masonry and roof structures

Timber Roof Structure

  • Designed new roof elements using C24 timber
  • Provided detailing for rafters, ridge beams, and connections
  • Ensured proper load paths into supporting walls

Risk Management & Compliance

A full risk assessment was carried out to address:
